Gary Champion

Gary started life on a local newspaper and moved to London to work for a motorsport paper ‘Motoring News’ and freelanced for the Sunday Mirror as a sub editor and on air shifts at Portsmouth’s Radio Victory.
‘Those days at Victory with the likes of Glen Richards who is perhaps better known as CJ Monroe for Devon listeners, Dave Christian etc as mentors were invaluable.’
Moving to TVam as a sports reporter and presenter but also involved in news stories like Lockerbie and the M1 plane crash, based in Dhahran during the Gulf War.
Radio has always been his first love.
‘You can engage with an audience and radio is a blank canvass and you can paint pictures in a listener’s mind’
In recent years Gary’s TV career has been varied, leading a team to do all of the BBC’s Election coverage for the last 5 General Elections, Royal, births, weddings, funerals and a Coronation.
Gary lives in Devon near Tavistock and doesn’t miss the London life.
‘I like people to say good morning, that happens down here. On the London tube, if you say good morning people think you must be a bit weird and to be avoided!’
Great to have DevonAir back on and glad to be playing a small part on it.
