Wales & West Utilities is progressing well with its work to upgrade the gas pipes in Newton Abbot.
The work, which started last July, is essential to keep the gas flowing safely and reliably to local homes and businesses, keeping people warm for generations to come.
The gas emergency and pipeline service has liaised with Devon County Council to plan the work, and the following has been agreed:
- A road closure on both Union Street and Courtney Street (6 - 31 January)
- During February work will be completed in the pedestrianised areas of both Wolborough Street and East Street, with access maintained for pedestrians.
- A lane closure on both Wolborough Street and Newfoundland Way (17 – 28 February)
- A separate team of engineers will be working along Queen Street, Quay Road, The Avenue and Oak Place (2 January – end February)
- Traffic lights will be in place on Queen Street and Quay Road, followed by a no right turn into The Avenue (3 – 14 February)
- A road closure on Oak Place (10 February – middle of march)
Wales & West Utilities Roxanne Whittaker is managing this work and said:
“We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future. We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.
“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across the Newton Abbot area. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.
“This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport hydrogen and biomethane, so we can all play our part in a green future.”
