Police secure 44 charges for shoplifting, violence and drug offences in Torquay

Devon & Cornwall Police are taking a tough stance against criminals in Torquay, having secured charges for 44 offences in May and June [2024] for shoplifting, drug dealing and violent offences.

Inspector Chris Lithgow, who heads up the neighbourhood team in Torquay, said: “This proactive action has happened as a result of the support from people in our communities.

“Over the past two months, the public have shared reports with us about drug use, dealing drugs within the community, and shoplifting. In response to this, our officers have gone out to arrest and charge individuals for nearly 50 offences, including individuals who are responsible for 21 shoplifting offences. These people are currently awaiting sentencing from the courts.

“Your reports have meant we’ve been able to achieve these positive results to help make our streets safer. It’s important to remember that whilst we might not always have time to feedback on the information you provide us, we do take your reports seriously. I hope this goes some way in showing just how significant your reports are to our investigations and targeting criminals on our streets. Your information is really important to us, no matter how small you may think it is.

“We also want all victims to know that if they do come forward to report a crime to us, their needs will remain at the forefront of our investigations. We know how frightening and worrying it can be, so we’ll make sure victims are provided with regular contact, relevant support and safeguarding help every step of the way.

“These crime types can have such a far-reaching negative impact on local businesses and the wider community. Our police officers will continue to be tough on crime and do all they can to take proactive action to investigate and arrest suspects as quickly as possible.”

Police officers will continue to conduct high visibility foot and vehicle patrols across Torquay to target and deter people looking to commit crime, while providing a reassurance to the public.

Please continue to report crime and intelligence on the Devon & Cornwall website or by calling 101.

Information can also be passed completely anonymously to independent charity Crimestoppers, just call 0800 555111, or via their website.
