Money seized from criminals being used for good at local sports club

Devon & Cornwall Police in South Devon are making good use of money that is seized from criminals who have financially benefitted from their crimes by reinvesting it to good causes in the community.

Recently, the Force awarded £300 to the Newton Abbot Under 10s rugby group to help fund a new gazebo. The gazebo will act as well-needed shelter to protect players from all weather conditions and a safe base for children when attending matches across Devon.

Inspector James Johnson, who heads up the neighbourhood policing team in Newton Abbot said: “Not only does the rugby club offer young people a chance to grow their passion for sport, but it’s also an outlet for them to learn essential life skills outside of school in a fun informal setting.

“The non-profit club has one of the largest junior attendees, teaching over 300 young people aged 5–18. Being able to reinvest money from crime and use it to support a club that has a positive impact on the lives of so many young people in our community is wonderful.”

Matt Pomeroy, under U10's coach at the rugby club said: "Newton Abbot U10's would like to say a massive thank you to Devon & Cornwall Police for our new gazebo!

“We are looking forward to watching some quality rugby from our new and dry gazebo. It will be a fantastic addition to the squad and will really help to keep teams dry and out of the weather and ready for some great rugby."

Police teams in South Devon regularly award grants to a range of projects, charities, and groups in the area from local foodbanks to volunteer training.

Police in South Devon are pleased to continue furthering their impact in 2024 and funding more worthwhile causes in communities.
