Closure order granted to tackle antisocial behaviour, Torquay

In response to community concerns regarding antisocial behaviour at an address in Torquay, a closure order was granted against a property to prevent people from entering the address for a designated period of time.

Police in Torquay worked alongside Torbay Council to gain the closure order, which was granted at an address in Melville Street. 

Police Sergeant (PS) Natalie Booth, who led the activity, said: “The decision to enforce a closure order is not something that is taken lightly – it involves a lot of community engagement, investigation and partnership working. In this instance, we received numerous reports from concerned residents, reporting noise nuisance and drugs, leading to further antisocial behaviour outside the address.

“We know how this type of behaviour can have a negative impact on the local community and residents, which is why robust action was taken to tackle the problem.”

The closure order is in place against the property for three months. The order will restrict anyone from entering the property for that period. If the order is not followed, individuals will receive a fine, imprisonment or both. The individuals residing at the property have been provided support while the order is in place.

PS Booth added: “The closure order forms part of our proactive activity to deter and prevent this type of behaviour. Our officers will continue to closely monitor the situation, working with partners to address the long-term issues surrounding the causes of antisocial behaviour in the area, while engaging with residents who have been affected.

“Thank you to all the residents for coming forward and reporting. Your reports have been an essential part of our investigation, allowing us to successfully gain this closure order.

“This is a demonstration of our commitment to making sure Torquay remains a safe place for people to live, work and visit. I would like to encourage the public to report crime to us – we are listening to your concerns and putting plans in place to take action against people who are causing harm in the community.”
