People living near a narrow seafront road in Torquay have called for action to protect pedestrians from speeding traffic.

They say the stretch of Ilsham Road between Ilsham Marine Drive and Meadfoot Green isn’t safe.
There is no pavement, and passing cars have been clocked at up to 45mph in the 30mph zone. Residents want a pavement and a 20mph limit.
Beth Huntley, who presented a petition to Torbay Council, said: “This stretch of road is extremely dangerous. Help us to feel safer.”
Her petition was signed by more than 120 people, and said many pedestrians and cyclists used the road linking Meadfoot beach to the green.
It went on: “Although most vehicles obey the current 30mph speed limit, many are not prepared to stop or give the required two-metre gap to pedestrians as per the updated Highway Code.
“Improving safe access to roads for all users is essential if we are to improve uptake of active travel which is key to tackling climate change.”
Ms Huntley told councillors she had been ‘overwhelmed’ by the strength of feeling in the neighbourhood, and surprised at how many people said they would not walk the route because it was not safe.
“Don’t children deserve a safer route to walk to school?” she asked.
The petition has been passed to a council director to consider a response.
