Voters urged to remember photo ID at Thursday’s elections

People are being reminded to make sure they have appropriate photo ID on them when voting in this Thursday’s (2 May) elections in Exeter.

Polling stations will be open from 7am until 10pm across the city as people go to the polls. The elections in Exeter are for the City Council as well as the Police and Crime Commissioner for Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Anyone who is unsure of where to vote can enter their postcode or address on the City Council website exeter.gov.uk/pollingstations to find out which polling station to use.

Everyone voting in person at a polling station on Thursday will need to ensure they show photo ID.

There are a number of accepted forms of ID that can be shown at the polling station. This includes:

  • Passport
  • Driving Licence
  • Blue Badge
  • Older Person’s Bus Pass funded by the UK Government

Voters will be able to use expired ID if they are still recognisable from the photo.

For a full list of accepted ID, along with more information about the requirement and details of how to apply for the free ID, go to exeter.gov.uk/voterid

Around 15,000 people in Exeter have chosen to vote by post. However with time running out, it is possible to return the postal vote at a polling station on the day of the election. There are however, new regulations – introduced as part of the Elections Act 2022 – that have now come into force regarding this.

The rules relate to the handling and delivery of postal votes by hand and not via Royal Mail.

Any person who applies for and receives a postal vote can only hand their postal vote in to an authorised person at a polling station and they will be required to complete a form in the process.

They will be limited to handing in the postal votes of five other persons.

If the form is not completed, then the postal vote (and any others being handing in) will be rejected.
