Volunteers contribute 150 hours to revitalising Exeter

InExeter is celebrating the rejuvenation of three key areas in the city, thanks to the dedicated efforts of volunteers from the business community and residents.

Neighbourhood Action Days, a community-driven initiative launched earlier this year by InExeter, the Business Improvement District (BID) for Exeter, aims to connect communities and instil civic pride.

Led by Projects Manager Mattie Richardson, and supported by the City Coucnil’s Parks and Green Spaces team, these days of action have already made a lasting impact on Exeter’s streets and public spaces.

So far Neighbourhood Action Days have:

  • Contributed 150 volunteer hours to enhancing Exeter’s public areas
  • Cleared 60 wheelbarrows of weeds
  • Revitalised three locations across the city

These improvements have brightened areas such a part of Gandy Street near RAMM, the Castle Quarter walkway between Exeter Phoenix and Exeter Library and important thoroughfares like Sidwell Street and South Street, including Coombe Street, which links the city centre to Exeter Quay.

The success of these events is due to the dedication of individuals and businesses who donated their time and resources. A team from Primark joined the Neighbourhood Action Day in South Street.

Store Manager Aaron Bliss said: “My team had a fantastic experience—the day was so fulfilling that they said they’d do it even if it weren’t a workday. That sense of accomplishment makes it all the more worthwhile, and I’m excited to be part of the next one.”

Key volunteer activities included litter picking, sweeping, weeding, pathway cleaning, flower bed maintenance, and rejuvenating street furniture enhancing green spaces for the public to enjoy.

Laura Bowden, a local resident and volunteer, said: “I met so many interesting people and really enjoyed the physical nature of the day. It felt great to contribute to the community while working in nature, which I’ve missed since moving into a flat.”

Max Sayers, Director at Nooko Ltd, which is currently renovating two buildings on South Street, contributed resources to the most recent Neighbourhood Action Day.

He said: “As someone with a strong connection to Exeter, it's fantastic to see projects like this benefiting the whole community. I was eager to donate materials to support and hope this initiative continues to grow—by working together, we can create a better city for all.”

The last Neighbourhood Action Day of the year will be held on Tuesday, October 1, focusing on Magdalen Road. Planned activities include planting spring bulbs, weeding, litter picking, and refreshing street furniture to ensure this vital area continues to flourish.

Nicola Wheeler, CEO of InExeter, said: “We are dedicated to supporting local businesses and improving Exeter’s streetscape. Even small actions can lead to big changes, and we encourage everyone to join us in making our city a more beautiful and welcoming place.”

Cllr Ruth Williams, Lead Councillor for Place and City Management, said: “This is a great initiative and I congratulate everyone who gave up their time to get involved.

“Everyone can play a part in helping Exeter to look its best, and I very much welcome this partnership between InExeter, the business community, local residents and the City Council.”
