South West Water (SWW) is currently on-site addressing a burst sewage pipe on Maer Lane in Exmouth.
On Wednesday evening, a sewage spill occurred at the SWW pumping site, according to reports from residents on the Exmouth Community Facebook page. The spill has led to sewage flowing onto the road.
As a result of the incident, East Devon District Council has issued a warning against swimming at Exmouth seafront due to ongoing pollution. The council stated, "At 17:31 this afternoon, we were informed of a pollution incident on private land near the Maer Road pumping station in the Exmouth area. Bathing is currently not advised on Exmouth seafront. Further updates will be provided as we receive them."
In response, tankers are being used to transport sewage away from the pumping station. The road has been closed, and South West Water (SWW) is working to repair and temporarily fix the burst.
The situation remains ongoing, but local stakeholders, including South West Water, East Devon District Council, and David Reed, MP for Exmouth and Exeter East, have been informed.
South West Water commented, "Our teams are diligently working to repair a burst sewer on private land near the Maer Road pumping station. We are using tankers to divert flows from the burst site to the Maer Lane treatment works, enabling our teams to address the damaged pipe.
"An overland pipe will be installed overnight as a temporary measure until a permanent repair can be completed. To ensure the safety of our teams and road users, we have temporarily closed Maer Lane. We appreciate the patience of local residents and visitors during this time."
