Police Fund helps Exeter football club launch Future Leaders Academy

An Exeter football club who applied for community funding were delighted to score an important goal for their future recently.

Central FC is based in the city and the team train at King George V playing fields. The club was founded back in 1994 so this year marks their 30th anniversary.

With the Euros football tournament in full swing and England still in the competition, the Exeter club are gearing up for a busy time ahead.

Lawrence Schneck, committee member and treasurer of the club, explained: “Next season, we are excited to launch the Future Leaders Academy, a new initiative for us. Our goal is to nurture our players not only as footballers but as well-rounded individuals.

“We face oversubscription in certain youth age groups every year. The club wanted a grant for coach and referee training to address this issue, particularly for under 18/16 year old players who may disengage from sport. Encouraging them to obtain coaching or referee badges could help retain their involvement.

Lawrence added: “We believe that providing a safe and supportive environment for our young girls and boys to explore new skills will greatly enhance their abilities and confidence. Our aim is to cultivate future leaders and ambassadors of our club by empowering our players to become the next generation of club leaders.”

Devon & Cornwall Police bosses recently voted to hand over £1,526 to Central FC as part of the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) scheme. This allows police forces to give much needed funds to local groups and good causes in their communities. Convicted criminals are stripped of their cash and assets and the confiscated money is given to local people who can make good use of it and keep the public healthy and away from trouble.

Lawrence commented: “We are thrilled and extremely grateful to receive this funding. It will significantly support our efforts to develop young talent and foster leadership within our club."

Each year Devon & Cornwall Police give out funds to community groups to improve wellbeing and divert people away from crime.

If you wish to apply for funding for a community group in the Devon & Cornwall Police area please speak to a member of your local neighbourhood police team.
