Police are investigating a series of thefts and attempted thefts of vehicles in East Devon.

Organised Crime Groups are targeting modern cars with keyless entry

A new technique being used is using a relay to intercept a car signal from the keys inside the house. Police would like to remind the public of the use of Faraday bags or boxes. These bags are designed for keys, and the spare key, to be put inside and this prevents a signal interception. You can also turn off keyless fobs wireless signal using the car manual. It can seconds for a car to be stolen using this method.

Other steps that can be used to avoid this happening to your car are:

- ALWAYS lock your vehicle. Whenever you are away from your vehicle, i.e. filling up with fuel or it is parked, always make sure you have locked it.

- NEVER leave your keys in the vehicle.

- Make sure windows and sun roofs are fully closed when your vehicle is unattended.

- Keep your keys out of view. Do not leave your vehicle keys where they can be seen through a window or door, especially for vehicles that use keyless entry as this means your car can be unlocked, without your key as long as the car is only a short distance from them.

- Avoid parking in dark areas. Try to park on well lit, visible roads if possible.

Please remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to Police via 101 or in an emergency always call 999. Alternatively, you can report information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
