Cranbrook Town Council has introduced its first-ever mobility scooter, which will be available for residents and visitors to hire free of charge.

This new initiative is designed to enhance accessibility, making it easier for people to explore the town and its award-winning Cranbrook Country Park.

The project, a collaboration between Cranbrook Town Council, Devon County Council, LiveWest, and Move More Cranbrook, was officially launched last week. To mark the occasion, a demonstration ride to Cranbrook Country Park took place, with town councillors, sponsors, and local residents in attendance.

Ray Bloxham, from Cranbrook Town Council, commented on the town's growth, saying, "Cranbrook has expanded rapidly over the past decade. With amenities now spread across the area, including the 35-hectare Cranbrook Country Park, we want to ensure residents and visitors can move around with ease." He also expressed gratitude to Devon County Council, LiveWest, and Move More Cranbrook for their support in funding the project.

The concept for the initiative emerged during a Clyst Valley Regional Park meeting, where LiveWest’s community connector brought key stakeholders together to turn the idea into reality. LiveWest contributed £1,000 from its community investment fund towards the project.

Lesley Browne, LiveWest’s community connector, said: "We are thrilled to have helped fund the purchase of the mobility scooter, which will make Cranbrook’s beautiful green spaces and local amenities more accessible to everyone, especially those with mobility challenges. This free service will make it easier for residents to explore the country park, visit local shops, or even run simple errands."

Matt Rowett of Move More Cranbrook added: "This initiative aligns perfectly with our goal of encouraging people of all ages and abilities to stay active and enjoy the outdoors. We’re excited to see this new resource being used by families and groups."

The mobility scooter can be hired in two-hour slots during weekdays, from 10am to 2pm, giving people the chance to visit Cranbrook Country Park and nearby attractions. The park itself has been awarded the prestigious Green Flag and is recognized by the Devon Wildlife Trust's Treescape.

To book the scooter, residents can contact the Cranbrook Town Council office at the Younghayes Centre or send an email to bookings@cranbrooktowncouncil.gov.uk.
