Medieval Treasure Unearthed Near Silverton by Exmouth Detectorist
Silverton, Devon — Local metal detecting enthusiast Chris Gates from Exmouth has made an extraordinary discovery while out searching the fields near Silverton — unearthing three medieval gold coins in remarkably pristine condition.
The find, believed to date back several centuries, is being described as “pretty unique” by local historians. Gold coins from the medieval period are rare enough, but finding three together in one spot is considered highly unusual.
“These things come out of the ground looking almost as good as the day they were dropped,” said Chris, who was thrilled by the unexpected discovery.
The farmer who owns the land is equally delighted. “It’s fantastic to see history like this being uncovered right here on our land,” they commented. The coins will now be recorded by local authorities and assessed for their historical significance.
Experts say that while individual medieval gold coins occasionally surface in the region, a find like this is extraordinary and offers valuable insights into the area’s history.
Chris hopes the discovery will encourage others to take an interest in the hidden stories beneath our feet.
