Historic Custom House set to reopen following restoration

The Custom House Visitor Centre on Exeter’s quayside is set to reopen on Saturday 22 March following key work to the building.

The landmark building has been closed for a while to allow for essential maintenance, building and restoration work. The work has taken a little longer than expected.

The ongoing work sees the relocation of the reception and the creation of a new gallery.

Constructed in 1680, the Exeter Grade 1 listed building is the oldest purpose-built custom house in England. It stands as a testament to Exeter's thriving woollen cloth industry during its prime.

Today, the impressive building serves as an engaging visitor centre, with interactive display, illustrations and artefacts that bring Exeter’s quayside history to life. Recently the building’s beautiful plaster ceilings on the first floor were fully restored. Last summer the building was also repointed, making it watertight.

The Custom House apologises for any inconvenience the closure has caused.
