Exmouth Town Council is excited to announce the relaunch of the Exmouth Cup scheme, a community initiative aimed at reducing the environmental impact of single-use coffee cups.
he scheme will provide up to 4,000 reusable cups to participating cafés in Exmouth, offering customers a sustainable alternative to disposable takeaway cups.
The Exmouth Cups are available for free to borrow and return to any participating café in Exmouth, making it easier for customers to make environmentally conscious choices. Currently, the following cafés are part of the scheme: Postcards Café (located in the Strand), Deli on the Strand, and Harbour View Café (on the seafront). These participating cafés will clean and prepare the cups for reuse, ensuring they are ready to be loaned to the next customer.
Supporting the Community
In addition to the cafés, Exmouth Town Council will retain 500 cups to loan to community groups and organizations for catering at local events. Community groups interested in borrowing a box of cups are encouraged to reach out to Exmouth Town Council’s Climate Officer, Zoey Cooper, at zoey.cooper@exmouth.gov.uk.
Raising Awareness on the Environmental Impact
The Exmouth Cup scheme is part of a larger effort to reduce waste in the town. Did you know that globally, 2.5 billion single-use coffee cups are discarded every year? Or that a person throwing away one coffee cup per day generates an estimated 11kg of waste annually? With only around 1% of single-use cups being recycled, this small item, which is used for the brief moment it takes to drink a coffee, can take centuries to decompose.
The Exmouth Cups are designed to make a lasting impact. The goal is for each cup to be used repeatedly, reducing the need for single-use alternatives and cutting down on waste.
The Exmouth Cup – A Sustainable Solution
Made from recycled polypropylene and manufactured in the UK, the Exmouth Cup is not only eco-friendly but also practical and durable. It offers a lower environmental impact than single-use paper cups after just three uses. Features include:
• Robust construction designed to withstand hundreds of uses.
• Insulated to keep your drink hot while protecting your hands.
• Compatible with regular recyclable takeaway lids.
Exmouth Cup Drop-Off Bins
To further support the scheme, Exmouth Town Council will install Exmouth Cup drop-off bins outside Postcards Café and Harbour View Café. These bins will be available for customers to return used Exmouth Cups for washing and reuse.
Exmouth Town Council encourages all residents and visitors to take part in the Exmouth Cup scheme and help make Exmouth a greener, more sustainable town.
