The importance of Exeter’s historic Quay and Canal for both leisure and commercial use has been highlighted by the city’s Lead Councillor for City Management.

Cllr Ruth Williams, who has responsibility for waterways, said the Quay and Canal, which are maintained by Exeter City Council, are a fantastic resource for residents, visitors and users of the waterway.

A number of boats have recently been craned in and out of the water at Gabriel’s Wharf and the waterway remains important for commercial users as well as leisure enthusiasts.

Cllr Williams said: “The waterways of the Exeter Port Authority stretch from the Mill the Exe to a mile out to sea at Exmouth, so it’s a huge expanse of water.

“It is a varied and beautiful part of Exeter and there are so many different activities that happen here. It offers fantastic opportunities for residents and visitors.

“A lot of maintenance is required by our waterways team because the safety of the area is their responsibility. There is a lot of work that goes on that people may not be aware of.”

Cllr Williams added: “The area is a real leisure spot, with people walking and cycling, or exercising their dogs.

“The river and the canal run in parallel, the river feeds the Canal and the Riverside Valley Park is in the middle, and it is an absolute haven for wildlife.”

Cllr Williams said the city is applying for a Harbour Revision Order (HRO) for Exeter, which would set out the powers the authority has within the boundaries of the harbour in Exeter.

The HRO will help to secure the improvement, maintenance and management of the port and provide the Council with a set of flexible statutory powers.

Cllr Williams said: “It is very important that the Council has the necessary powers to ensure the effective and efficient management of the city’s waterways, improving the safety and management of the harbour, and a HRO is designed to achieve this.”
