The Enthronement Service of the new Bishop of Exeter, The Right Reverend Dr Mike Harrison, will take place at Exeter Cathedral on Saturday 2 November, at 3pm.
Bishop Mike is the 72nd Bishop of Exeter.
Following traditions stretching back hundreds of years, the Enthronement Service will feature contributions from local schools and community groups.
It will include processions, music and an official welcome, as well as the anointing and enthronement of the new bishop. The service will be followed by a drinks reception.
The Lord Mayor of Exeter Cllr Kevin Mitchell, Leader of the City Council Cllr Phil Bialyk and City Council Chief Executive Bindu Arjoon will all attend the event, along with council leaders and dignitaries from across the county.
The Lord Mayor will give a welcome speech at Exeter’s historic Guildhall at 2.15pm ahead of a procession to the Cathedral at 2.30pm for a service which has traditions stretching back hundreds of years.
They include the new diocesan bishop being required to knock on the great West Door before being permitted to enter for the 3pm ceremony.
The new Bishop will be officially enthroned on the Cathedral’s medieval bishop’s throne, thought to be the tallest piece of medieval woodwork in Europe.
In June Downing Street announced the new Bishop of Exeter after his appointment was approved by the King.
Bishop Mike was the Suffragan Bishop of Dunwich in the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich. He succeeds the Right Reverend Robert Atwell, who retired last September.
Some limited tickets are available for anyone wanting to attend the service at the Cathedral. To book a free ticket to attend the service visit the Cathedral website
