Councillors vote in favour of a review of Cranbrook’s governance arrangements

A review of Cranbrook’s governance arrangements, including the town’s boundaries, will go ahead, following a vote of East Devon District Councillors at a Full Council meeting on Wednesday 26 February 2025.

A review of Cranbrook’s governance arrangements, including the town’s boundaries, will go ahead, following a vote of East Devon District Councillors at a Full Council meeting on Wednesday 26 February 2025.

The review was requested by the Town Council, following adoption of the Cranbrook Plan in late 2022, so that Cranbrook’s boundaries reflect planned expansion. The aim of a Community Governance Review is to ensure that appropriate community engagement, local democracy, and effective, convenient delivery of local services, are in place.

Provisional timetable of the review:

  • Stage one - March 2025 – June 2025 - Invite consultation submissions
  • Stage two - July 2025 – Consideration of submissions received, and draft proposals prepared
  • Stage three - August 2025 – October 2025 – Draft proposals are published and consultation on proposals undertaken
  • Stage four – November 2025 – January 2025 - Consideration of submissions - received and final proposals prepared
  • February 2026 - Preparation of recommendations, approval by Full Council, and publication of recommendations

Further details of the process will follow in due course. Neighbouring parishes affected by any changes to the boundaries of Cranbrook will be involved in consultation, as part of the review.

Following the review, the Council will decide whether to make a Reorganisation Order, which would make any changes that have been agreed.

Councillor Sarah Jackson, East Devon District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Communications and Democracy, said:

“Cranbrook’s future expansion plans are now more defined, meaning that now is the right time to give residents their say about whether the current arrangements, including the Town Council’s boundaries, reflect the needs of those living in Cranbrook and the surrounding area.”

“The decision to undertake the review does not predetermine the final outcome, but it simply recognises that there are sufficient grounds to undertake a review. The District Council will soon share details of the upcoming consultation process, and I encourage you to take part. Your views will help shape the recommendations of the report, and ultimately the future of the town and its neighbouring communities.”
