There will be by-elections in two Exeter City Council wards on 1 May after two City Councillors decided to stand down.
The by-elections will take place in the Mincinglake & Whipton ward, where Naima Allcock has stood down, and in Topsham, where Joshua Ellis-Jones has also stood down.
People are being advised to contact the other two councillors in each ward if they have any queries or issues. Details can be found on the City Council’s website at https://committees.exeter.gov.uk/mgMemberIndex.aspx?FN=WARD&VW=LIST&PIC=0
The by-elections will take place on the same day as elections for Devon County Council, which are being held throughout Exeter.
Apart from the two by-elections, there are no other City Council elections this year, because the local authority holds its elections in ‘thirds’, meaning there are no elections every fourth year.
Anyone who wants to vote in May’s by-elections and County Council elections must be on the electoral register.
For those who are not currently on the electoral register, there’s still plenty of time to register. The deadline for registrations is midnight on Friday 11 April. It’s really simple to register, just go to the Gov.uk website at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. Those who are unsure if they are already on the register can contact the City Council directly at electoral.services@exeter.gov.uk or by calling 01392 265141.
People will also need to make sure they have appropriate photo ID if they are voting in person at a polling station. For a full list of accepted ID, visit the Electoral Commission website at www.electoralcommission.org.uk/voting-and-elections/voter-id/accepted-forms-photo-id
Those who are unable or do not wish to vote at a polling station can opt for a postal vote. To do this, visit the Electoral Commission website at https://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/voting-and-elections/ways-vote/apply-vote-post
The deadline for postal vote applications is 5pm on Monday 14 April.
