Many of you will be travelling on our roads to visit loved ones or attend festive events this week, the message from Devon and Cornwall Police is clear – if you are driving, do not drink any alcohol or consume any drugs.
Roads Policing Team Sergeant Owen Messenger said: “If you are driving and consuming alcohol or drugs you are risking your own life as well as the lives of other innocent road users.
“Our message all year round is to not drive when under the influence, but this week in particular is likely to see more people considering taking a risk and getting behind the wheel in an unfit state.
“If you are driving, one is one too many.”
A conviction for drink or drug driving is likely to see any driver given a ban of at least 12 months along with a substantial fine and an impact on both at home and from many employers.
As part of Operation Limit, Devon and Cornwall officers will be proactively patrolling our road networks to ensure we act upon intelligence and take enforcement action against any driver taking a risk.
Sgt Messenger added: “Not only is the impact on the person who chooses to take the wrong option and drive when unfit. All too often, a family is bereaved and left to pick up the pieces as the result of the actions of a drink or drug driver.
“I would ask anyone attending a party or family gathering to think about how they are getting home in advance and consider nominating a designated driver or booking transport before travelling.
“Any driver should also remember that alcohol and drugs takes time to clear your system and you may still be impaired the morning after – if in doubt, do not get behind the wheel, there is no excuse for putting yourself and others at risk.”
