Devon and Cornwall Police Rural Affairs Team has reported a spike in quad bike thefts across the region in recent weeks. Farmers and farm workers are urged to remain vigilant and enhance security measures to deter thefts.
Authorities emphasize the importance of securing vehicles and equipment. They advise always removing keys from vehicles when not in use and storing machinery in lockable sheds or garages where possible. Enhanced farm security measures, such as locking gates, installing cameras, alarms, and property marking, are strongly recommended.
Modern property marking solutions, including DNA markers provided by companies like Selectamark and Smart Water, can add an additional layer of security. These forensic marking systems are endorsed by Secured by Design, a police initiative promoting safety and security standards.
The police also suggest fitting trackers and immobilizers to all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and quads to aid in recovery if stolen. Farmers are encouraged to record vehicle and machinery details such as VINs, engine, and chassis numbers and to photograph their equipment for identification purposes.

By taking proactive steps, authorities hope to reduce thefts and make it more difficult for criminals to target rural properties.
