Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service has been called out to more 870 electrical fires in the last three years, a new investigation has revealed.

Figures obtained by Legal Expert show that of those, more than 520 happened in domestic properties with tumble dryers found to be the leading appliance to cause electrical house fires across Devon and Somerset.

Around 4,000 house fires across the UK every year are caused by faulty electrics, according to the Home Office.

In the run-up to Christmas, fire services across the UK are releasing their latest advice and guidance about how to stay safe during the festive period.

Last year, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service (DSFRS) issued a specific warning to residents about tumble dryers, cooking appliances and electrical wires and products.

“Dishwashers, tumble dryers and washing machines are all high powered appliances and can catch fire. Reduce the risk of this causing serious damage to your home by never leaving them on when you go out, or when you’re asleep…

“Never leave your Christmas dinner cooking unattended. Check your Christmas lights are in good working order.”

Legal Expert’s investigation has found that between 2021 and 2024, Devon and Somerset fire crews attended 872 fires caused by electricals alone. Of those, 529  were in domestic properties (homes) - while 293 were in commercial properties such as office buildings.

DSFRS revealed the leading appliance to cause electrical fires in the last three years was tumble dryers, accounting for the majority of electrical blazes in the home.

Washing machines were the second most common followed by fridge freezers, fluorescent lights and battery chargers.

The fire service also confirmed that in the last three years, there has been one fatality as a result of electrical fires as well as 41 slight and serious injuries.

The service is warning all residents to remain vigilant this Christmas especially when it comes to cooking, washing and electrical products.

A statement issuing guidance and advice added: “Take care around alcohol and don’t cook if you’ve had a few too many. Alcohol can cause you to take risks, be distracted, and sometimes even fall asleep - a very dangerous combination with cooking.

“Never leave your white goods on when you are not home or asleep. If your dishwasher, tumble dryer, washing machine or other appliance starts to smoke, or a small fire breakout, you have more chance of noticing if you are home and will be able to quickly call 999.

“Check your Christmas lights are British Safety Standard and bought from a reputable retailer. Always turn your Christmas lights off before bed or going out.”

Legal Expert has a team of specialist personal injury solicitors who are experienced in electrical fire claims due to defective products.

They operate a 24-hour helpline and claim online form, which you can access on their website.
