Lively Nature walks in Stover Country Park led by Dartmoor's Daughter

Natural and built heritage of Stover Country Park to be brought to life on walks led by Dartmoor’s Daughter

The ‘Restoring Stover Park’ project will host a series of six heritage walks exploring the scenic and historic Templer Way, starting later this month (September) and continuing throughout next year.

The walks will follow sections of the Templer Way route, which connects Dartmoor with Stover Country Park and onto Teignmouth.

The first walking event will be from Haytor Visitor Centre on Dartmoor to Yarner Woods on Friday 27 September, starting at Haytor at 9am and finishing at Stover Country Park at 2pm. The walk is around 4 miles on open hilly moorland and woodland, and is for people aged 18 and over.

Bookings will include transport from Stover Country Park to Haytor, a guided walk led by qualified guide Emma Cunis, also known as ‘Dartmoor’s Daughter’, to Yarner Woods, transport from Yarner Woods back to Stover Country Park and lunch around a campfire at Stover.

Councillor Andrea Davis, Devon County Council Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Environment and Transport, said:

“These walks will be a great opportunity for people to explore parts of the Templer Way and find out more about how granite was taken from Dartmoor via the Haytor Granite Tramway and Stover Canal. The National Lottery Heritage Funding through the Restoring Stover Park project has made these events possible and I hope plenty of people come along to discover the history of the area while enjoying the incredible scenery.”

Thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund, tickets are available for people living locally to Stover Country Park. There will be a limited number of free bursary spaces available for individuals living on a low income and tickets priced at £10 or £20.

Clothing and equipment (for example waterproof jacket and over-trousers) can also be loaned to anyone in need of kit to be able to take part in the walk.
