Children learn more about farming

Primary school students from across Devon gathered at Westpoint Arena this week for the annual Farmwise event.

More than 1,700 children from Key Stage 2 had the opportunity to learn about farming and the journey their food takes from farm to table.

Farmwise offers a variety of hands-on activities, ranging from interacting with pigs and sheep to learning about food production and recycling. The event aimed to teach children about the entire food chain. Karen Wonnacott from CMC, who managed the dairy section, emphasised the importance of introducing children to agriculture at a young age. She said, "It’s crucial to share positive messages about farming with young people. Today provides the perfect platform to showcase food and farming, and we are grateful to the businesses who contributed their time."

A new highlight this year was Trevor from The Sheep Show and a section on "Burping Cows," which educated students about methane emissions from livestock. Stephen Atkey from South West Norse, a regular participant since 2016, ran the food section, where children could make pizzas and learn about milking cows. He stressed the significance of teaching kids that "food doesn’t just come in plastic wrapping from the supermarket" and hopes the event will inspire a future generation of farmers.

Farmwise 2024 was organised in collaboration with the Devon County Agricultural Association, Devon County Council, Southwest Norse Group, Mole Valley Farmers, and other agricultural partners. Cathy Case, who led a workshop on soil education, praised the event as a "positive opportunity to engage with children" and hoped they would carry these important lessons home.
